DESCRIPTION OF WORK

The primary objective of this role is to support the upkeep of the Gallitzin Forest District grounds and facilities, as well as to ensure effective wildfire prevention and protection for the general public. The responsibilities encompass a wide range of tasks, including but not limited to manual labor such as cleaning road culverts and ditches, repairing headwalls, maintaining public restrooms, mowing grass and weeds, raking leaves, collecting tree seeds, applying herbicides, painting, carpentry work, tree felling and cutting, building repairs, sign maintenance, deer fence repairs, tree planting, trail maintenance, trash removal, and painting state forest boundary lines. In addition to the manual work, this position also involves performing minor mechanical repairs and preventative maintenance on vehicles and equipment. Furthermore, the individual will assist the district mechanic with any major repairs that may be required. This ensures that all vehicles and equipment are in optimal condition for their respective tasks. Another crucial aspect of this role is to identify and investigate potential wildfire hazards within the assigned area. This includes locating areas that may pose a risk of wildfires and reporting on these findings. By promptly identifying and reporting these hazards, appropriate measures can be taken to mitigate the risk and prevent potential wildfires. In the event of a wildfire, you must be prepared to respond rapidly and efficiently. You will be responsible for providing an initial attack on the fire, working closely with forest fire wardens and other crew members. This collaborative effort ensures that wildfires are contained and controlled as quickly as possible, minimizing the potential damage and protecting both the forest and the public.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

Seasonal, full-time employment without benefits Work hours are 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Monday - Thursday, with 30-minute lunch. The season runs from approximately March until November at which the employee is placed on leave without pay. Salary:In some cases, the starting salary may be non-negotiable.
