Job Description

The Training Support Technician - Breathing Air, maintains the Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) equipment for the Emergency Services & Training Institute division. Responsible for the refill/testing/repair/maintenance/distribution of all SCBA related equipment. Required to maintain accurate testing, air monitoring, repair, fit test, flow test, and hydrostatic testing records, as well as, producing required test reports. May assist supervisor with all inventories, record keeping, ordering equipment and consumables. May assist Instructional Staff with training support as needed and may be required to assist other programs such as Extinguishers, Maintenance, and Private Sector.

This position reports to the Training Support Foreman-Breathing Air.

Required Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or GED.

  • One year of any maintenance/repair experience or combination of the following but not limited to: use of computer-based diagnostics, pneumatic equipment operation, tubing or pipe fitting, any mechanical repair/maintenance, and the use of hand/power tools.

Required Licenses/Certifications:

  • Must have a valid motor vehicle operator’s license or ability to obtain within 30 days of employment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Associate's Degree from an accredited college or university or certificate from an accredited trade school.

  • Emergency Services experience.

  • Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus or respiratory equipment experience.

  • Compressor or mechanical experience related to compression systems.

  • Electrical experience in troubleshooting or reading wiring diagrams.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to work in adverse conditions, standing, walking, sitting, climbing, bending/stooping, kneeling/squatting, reaching, talking, hearing, lifting, carrying, push/pulling light, moderate, and/or heavy objects.

  • Ability to maintain necessary physical abilities to perform required job functions.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to interpret basic technical drawings, sketches, blue prints, wiring diagrams, and manuals.

  • Ability to operate equipment such as forklift, air compressors, and SCBA refill equipment. Duties also include the operation of power equipment such as drills, saws, grinders.

  • Mechanically inclined.

  • Ability to follow instructions and communicate effectively to perform job responsibilities.

  • Oral and written communication skills.

  • Ability to maintain a professional behavior and demeanor at all times.

  • Ability to create a positive team approach environment and provide customer-friendly service to both internal and external customers.

Equipment:

  • Standard office equipment: computer, keyboard, multifunctional printer, telephone.

  • Backhoe, forklift, front loader, etc.

  • Hand/power tools, tubing bender/cutter, etc.

  • Breathing air compressor operations.

  • Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus diagnostic equipment.

  • Porta count fit test machine.

Notifications:

  • This position is security sensitive.

  • This position may require work beyond normal office hours and/or work on weekends.

  • This position requires compliance with state and federal laws/codes and Texas A&M University System/TEEX regulations and procedures.

  • All tasks and job responsibilities must be performed safely without injury to self or others in compliance with System and Agency safety requirements.

  • As part of TEEX’s mission of providing training, developing practical solutions, and saving lives; this position could be required, if called upon, to deploy within the State of Texas as directed by this position’s Division Director/HQ Department Head.

  • Ability to travel independently to other and/or remote locations by driving a personal or TEEX vehicle and/or flying on commercial airlines.

  • Beards, sideburns, or mustaches must not exceed 2' in length. Shaving of the entire sealing surface area of a respirator will be required for respirator annual fit testing and immediately upon assignment of a task requiring the use of a respirator. The requirement to shave will not be a valid reason to request the task be assigned to a coworker. Refusal to shave immediately upon the assignment of a task requiring the use of a respirator will result in disciplinary action.

  • Must comply with OSHA / NFPA standards, ESTI Respirator Protection Program related to the proper wearing of respirators.

Essential Duties, Tasks, and Percentages:

Class Support – 75%

  • Performs inspecting, refilling, maintaining, and testing of SCBA and SCBA related equipment in accordance with manufacturer's guidelines.

  • Ensures compressed air quality is tested as required.

  • Required to maintain accurate testing, air monitoring, repair, fit test, flow test, and hydrostatic testing records, as well as, producing required test reports.

  • Positions equipment necessary for class delivery.

  • Ensures all equipment is operational and ready for use.

  • Assists with preparation, cleanup, and restoration of training projects by securing the equipment in designated storage areas.

  • May assist Instructional Staff with SCBA training support.

  • May be required to assist other programs such as Extinguishers, Maintenance and Private Sector with facility operations.

Work Area Support – 15%

  • Maintains appearance of work area at all times, including sweeping and pick up of refuse in shop areas.

  • Ensures office/storage areas are organized and clean.

  • May be assigned to complete weekly Project Safety Analysis (PSA) of assigned facilities and reports any needed maintenance.

Supplies and/or Materials Procurement – 10%

  • May assist supervisor ordering supplies, equipment, and materials in accordance with TAMUS/TEEX/ESTI regulations.

  • Completes all required purchasing documentation.

Other Duties:

  • Interacts professionally and respectfully with staff, students, and external partners.

  • Complies with work schedule Monday-Friday 8-hour days, 40-hour week unless holiday or class schedule dictates otherwise at which time would be expected to work hours as directed by supervisor.

  • Reports to work on time and duty assignments on time.

  • Normal work hours are 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

  • May be required to work a flex work schedule to accommodate class, meeting, or training schedules.

  • Maintains a clean and neat appearance.

  • Must wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and specified uniforms as required.

  • Must show safety awareness and demonstrate safe working habits/practices.

  • Attends scheduled safety meetings.

  • Completes listed training to include: Word level I, Excel Level I, ESTI Safety Orientation, Basic First Aid, Purchasing Guidelines, In-house training prior to use for Mule, Forklift, TUG and all SCBA refill equipment.

  • Completes all SCBA training offered by the manufacturer for the types and brands of SCBA used at ESTI.
