Summary All hourly jobs are considered as open for bid on a continuous basis. Responsibilities As a Machinist, you will: From shop orders, verbal instructions, drawings, or other sketches determines work procedure, the machines and tools to be used, and occasionally the material required. Lays out operations on work piece involving interrelated dimensions and contours by scribing lines, arcs, circles, angles, tapers, center distances, and location points as a guide to setting up-the work on machine and machining to close tolerances. Computes clearance, tolerance, pitch, and fit. Sets up work on machines such as lathes, drill presses, power metal saws, ironworkers, line drilling machinery, milling machines, CNC turning and machining centers. Possesses CNC programming experience. Performs set-ups using specially constructed workholding devices, chucks or clamps, and aligns parts for accurate machining. Grinds, sharpens, and modifies cutting tools. Operates standard machine tools such as a lathes, drill presses, milling machines, and grinders to close tolerances. Makes necessary adjustments to keep machines in operation. Determines speeds, feeds, and sequence of operations. May assemble and disassemble, file, chip, scrape, ream, and anneal, incidental to machining operations. Fits parts together and checks work to close tolerances. From preliminary sketches or oral and very general instructions, develops ideas and preliminary designs into practical tools and devices. Works closely with design engineers and supervisors in developing new and improved tools and devices. Assists in and evaluates purchase of new tools and equipment as requested by the Manager for General Crafts Services. The screen-out element for this position is: Ability to do the work of the position without more than normal supervision to accomplish works and trades such as machining of surfaces at unusual or compound angles, items that require differential or compound indexing, multiple leads and various other nonstandard screw threads, helical or other types of gears, worm threads, or surfaces closely interrelated dimensions or complex configurations and performing machining operations on computer numerical control (CNC) machine tools including shop floor programming and using such procedures as multiple setups, in-place machining of fixtures, debugging first-run programs, and making or suggesting changes to machine tool programs. Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating. WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is normally performed in the Machine Shop at the Ross Complex. The hazards include: working near machinery; working around energized high voltage equipment; and being exposed to noise and vibration. The small amount of field work is performed both inside and outside and may include working from high ladders and scaffolds at heights up to 100 feet during inclement weather. Workers are subject to minor cuts, bruises, falls, and burns. Proper respiratory and safety equipment shall be worn when hazardous substances are being handled (solvent fumes, cleaners, epoxies, etc.). At times, work may be physically demanding. The work environment will occasionally include exposure to hazardous substances, (zinc etc.) that could, if precautions are not followed, pose a health risk. Emergencies, critical system conditions, or outage limitations may require that work be systemwide, done at night, or under serious time pressures. System priorities may require extended periods of overtime including working weekends and holidays. PHYSICAL CONDITIONS: Incumbents must be physically and mentally able to efficiently perform the essential duties of the position, with or without reasonable accommodation, without hazard to themselves or others.
