What you'll be doing

The Senior Manager, Technology Operational Risk is a seasoned professional responsible for fulfilling CIBC’s second line of defence review and challenge of technology risk across the organization. The role will provide oversight and consultation to internal stakeholders on risk mitigating controls and best practices for technology functions and capabilities, such as Incident, Change, Service Continuity, IT Asset Management, SDLC and architecture. The role will also provide independent challenge and oversight for technology team activities, including review of change initiatives, risk and control self-assessment and deficiency identification and mitigation. The role will be involved in technology incident management and reporting, scorecard risk reviews, policy & standard updates and compliance monitoring, and quarterly risk monitoring and reporting to senior committees.

The role applies leadership skills and technical expertise to ensure that effective processes are in place to identify, manage, measure, monitor, and control technology risk. In addition, the role provides continuous improvement leadership with respect to operational risk management methodologies and practices. The role drives innovation across all areas of responsibility, applying expert interpersonal, communication, and problem-solving skills.

How you’ll succeed

  • Risk management : As an individual contributor, the Senior Manager, Technology Operational Risk reviews operational practices, risk assessments, controls, deficiencies, metrics, and other relevant information to form an independent view of technology risks and perform effective challenge. A risk-based approach is leveraged to understand and manage risk of technology-related activities to ensure alignment to operational risk management policies and framework and CIBC risk appetite. In alignment with GORM’s operational risk management program and practices, this includes independent assessment of business lines on activities such as projects (CIRAs), risk and controls self-assessments (RCSAs), Operational Incidents, RAS and KRI development and monitoring, etc. using operational risk tools and processes. The Senior Manager leverages strong data and analytical skills to perform detailed research to produce risk insights on current and emerging technologies for distribution to various internal audiences. Impactful and insightful risk reporting is produced for presentation to senior leaders within CIBC.

  • Technical expertise - You bring instant credibility by skillfully leveraging your strong breadth of technology experience and depth of knowledge in key areas such as cloud computing, network and infrastructure management, technology architecture, IT service management, IT Asset Management and development and deployment practices (SDLC, DevOps, Agile) to review risks and controls of the business lines and drive positive risk management outcomes. You are relied upon for your deep expertise in specific domains to support the risk activities across the team (e.g. risk reviews, project reviews) operating in a matrix style team. Industry recognized technology certifications in their Subject Matter Expertise are preferred such as ITIL, CISM etc.

  • Collaboration – You will leverage your strong communication, interpersonal skills and teamwork to build and sustain strong internal relationships where you are viewed as a valued partner that offers sound guidance and demonstrates a deep understanding of their environment and context. The Sr Manager, Technology Operational Risk will be required to provide support to the entire Technology, Infrastructure and Innovation Operational Risk team where the application of their specific area(s) of technology expertise is required. This means that the Sr Risk Manager will be working on activities (e.g. Risk Reviews) that support other Directors within the Technology Operational Risk team.

  • Communicate Effectively – You demonstrate clarity of thought in both written and verbal communications. You will facilitate productive risk discussions and outcomes and will develop and deliver strong reporting content, presentations and assessment summaries on an ongoing basis for senior audiences and risk committees.

  • Proactive oversight and assessment – You will review operational practices, risk assessments, controls, deficiencies and other relevant information to form an independent view of operational risks. You will identify material and emerging risks through proactive risk reviews and monitoring of Key Risk Indicators and External Events. You will effectively communicate areas or concern to ensure appropriate risk mitigation actions are taken.

  • Facilitate Innovation – Support change and the maintenance of effective Operational Risk programs that allows CIBC to fulfill its purpose-driven mission. This will include new ideas that supports CIBC’s goal of an effective, efficient and radically simple Operational Risk and Control program.

  • Regulatory Oversight – Maintains knowledge of core prudential regulatory requirements related to the design and operation of technology controls and provides consultation and challenge to first line partners over alignment of technology capabilities to meet regulatory expectations.
