Description:

Supervises inmates in the St. Joseph County Jail in accordance with established policies, regulations, orders and procedures by performing the required duties.

Essential Functions:

Observes inmate conduct and behavior. Takes necessary actions to prevent disturbance and escapes. Inspects all security measures for function ability. Conducts inmate searches for contraband. Observes and supervises inmates during work assignments. Patrols assigned areas, looks for forbidden activities or unsatisfactory performance. Reports observations to superiors in written and oral form. Employs weapons or force to maintain order among prisoners, when necessary. Escorts inmates when necessary. Inmate supervision responsibilities only.

Qualifications:

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

High School diploma or GED, must be 21 years of age.

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITY:

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all unites of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs. Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exits. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of inmates or employees.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. Regularly required to walk up to two miles per day and stand or sit for extended periods of time. Occasionally required to run for distances up to one half mile. Must be able to climb and descend stairways. Required to speak and hear. Sight abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision and ability to adjust focus. May be required to run for short periods of time during emergency conditions. Must maintain physical ability to accomplish tasks at any time required.

LICENSE NEEDED:

Current and valid driver's license

DRUG SCREENING AND REQUIRED TESTING:

Must pass criminal background check Must pass drug screen Must pass polygraph test Must meet minimum physical requirements to participate and complete specialized self-defense training (this training is provided by St. Joseph County jail).

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. The noise level in the work environment is usually very loud. While performing duties an employee may be subjected to profanity and verbal abuse. While performing duties an employee may be subjected to an extremely confusing and disorganized situation and still be required to maintain a calm professional demeanor.
