The Research Scientist/Engineer 2 (E S UAW RSE) is primarily responsible for the daily operation and research in support of ongoing projects in the Tian laboratory within the Mitochondria & Metabolism Research Center (MMC) Under the general direction of Dr. Tian, this individual will organize the daily operations of the Tian laboratory and provide assistance and support to Dr. Tian’s research personnel and research activities. The laboratory is a multicultural, diverse and inclusive environment that foster collaborative research. Skill in effective communication and coordination are highly desirable.

Research in the Tian Laboratory focuses on the roles of cell metabolism and mitochondrial function in the pathogenesis of human diseases. The laboratory uses multi-disciplinary approaches to examine the system by combining high resolution NMR techniques and metabolomics with the ability to target molecular regulatory mechanisms via genetic manipulation in animal models. Dr. Tian is also interested in bi-directional translational research between the bench and the bedside to elucidate the functional significance of altered cellular metabolism in ischemic heart disease, obesity, diabetes, and heart failure.

This positions has two primary responsibilities:

  • Managing the laboratory environment and laboratory personnel so that it is organized, safe, reliable, productive, friendly, collaborative, and compliant. (50%)

  • The conduct of research in support of Dr. Tian’s research projects at the bench and using animal models. (50%)This is a multi-faceted, fast-paced and high-volume position. The position requires a self-starter, expert time manager, and an individual comfortable with a range of operational tasks and the ability to prioritize with ease and accuracy. The position works under close supervision to complete assigned tasks/projects with accuracy. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Management of Laboratory Operations – 50%

  • Reviewing, ordering and stocking necessary lab supplies.

  • Manage lab inventory, facilities-related requests, service contracts and overall lab maintenance.

  • Maintain lab resources and research records.

  • Serve as Environmental Health and Safety contact, coordinate lab inspections, provide safety reports, and update and maintain laboratory safety standards and procedures.

  • Ensure safety training and compliance of all lab personnel with the institutional, state, and federal regulatory policies, procedures, directives, and mandates.

  • Under the supervision of lab head, develop, implement, and maintain laboratory standard operating policies and key lab protocols and train the new lab members for those procedures.

  • Facilitate the communication between the lab the organization and the communication with collaborators.

  • Assist new lab member on-boarding process.Research Responsibilities – 50%

  • Performing measurement of mitochondrial function using cells or isolated mitochondria and Seahorse XF analyzer.

  • Training new users of Seahorse instrument and act as the contact person of the core facility.

  • Assisting in cell culture, molecular biology, imaging and various biochemical assays.

  • Contributing to the design and execution of animal studies to investigate the mechanisms of mitochondrial and metabolic disorders in human diseases.

  • Participate lab research projects using human samples or cellular and animal models.

  • Working with scientists in the lab to develop unique approaches/standards/methods for conducting research.

  • Collecting and analyzing research data. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Biochemistry or related life-science field.

  • Two years of relevant experience or Equivalent combination of education/experience. Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration. ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Familiarity with molecular, cellular, and physiological lab techniques, research equipment and research related software, as well as Microsoft Office and database software.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication, organization and planning skills, attention to details and ability to interact productively with lab and campus personnel. DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience in lab inventory and equipment maintenance, vendor communication, and knowledge of laboratory practices and safety procedures. Hiring grade and salary will be adjusted based on the applicant’s experience.
