Appointment Type: Temporary Provisional (TPV). This is not a permanent appointment. A provisional appointee must participate and be successful in a Civil Service examination for this classification and be selected through an open competitive process in order to be considered for permanent appointment. Provisional appointments may not exceed three (3) years.

Public Works currently has vacancies for the position of Survey Assistant I (5310) within our Bureau of Street Use and Mapping (BSM).

The Bureau of Street Use and Mapping (BSM) ensures that City sidewalks and streets are safe and accessible by permitting and inspecting the use of the public right of way. The bureau also collaborates on the development and execution of citywide initiatives to help businesses thrive and to activate shared public spaces. In addition, the bureau provides surveying services and maintains the official map of the City and County of San Francisco.

Under general supervision, as a Survey Assistant I, you will use safe working practices while operating equipment to perform paraprofessional surveying work in the office or field.

Important and Essential Duties:

As a Survey Assistant I, your duties may include but are not limited to the following:

  • Serve as a chain person by measuring horizontal distances between points, set survey points, record measurements for reference, and act as a recorder to the survey staff when needed.

  • Serve as a rod person by holding a rod or reflector, positioning backsights/targets, monitoring robotic survey equipment, slope, and construction staking as instructed by Survey Assistant II.

  • Using mathematical computations, reduce and check field survey notes and provide the survey team with data for further calculations, reports, and information.

  • Maintain clear lines of sight surrounding the survey equipment by clearing brush and other obstacles in survey lines to enable the survey team to set up the necessary equipment to measure distances and take accurate readings.

  • Check, clean, and maintain tools and other surveying equipment.

  • Use related applications to check survey information and maps; may include the use of AutoCAD and/or Tripod Data System (TDS).

  • Obtain survey-related documents related to maps and deeds.

  • Drive a vehicle to work sites to perform survey work.

Working Conditions:

The nature of the work will require some physical effort and manual dexterity occasionally lifting and carrying over 50 pounds and working in adverse weather or working conditions such as working in streets or roads in heavy traffic, in cold and rain.

Minimum Qualifications:

Experience:

  1. One (1) year of verifiable surveying experience (either in the office or field);

OR

Education:

  1. An Associate of Science degree with a concentration in Geomatics engineering or a related field (see Notes below).

Note:

  1. Related educational fields include Geography, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Math, and/or Civil Engineering.

Desirable Qualifications: The stated desirable qualifications may be used to identify candidates advancing to the interview process and/or to identify job finalist(s) at the end of the selection process when referred for hiring.

  • Knowledge and experience in operating surveying instruments (GPS, Laser Scanners, Total Stations, Digital Levels).

  • Experience using Survey Office Software.

  • Experiencing using AutoCAD Civil 3D. 

  • Knowledge of the California Subdivision Map Act.

  • Experience with government agencies in map reviewing (Parcel Map, Record of Surveys, Tract Maps).

CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENT

The selection process will include an evaluation of applications in relation to minimum requirements. Depending on the number of applicants, the Department may establish and implement additional screening mechanisms to comparatively evaluate the qualifications of candidates. If this becomes necessary, only those applicants whose qualifications most closely meet the needs of the Department will move forward in the recruitment process.

Minimum Qualification Supplemental Questionnaire (MQSQ):

Candidates may be required to complete an MQSQ as part of the employment application. This MQSQ is designed to obtain specific information regarding an applicant's experience in relation to the Minimum Qualifications (MQ) for this position. The MQSQ will be used to evaluate if the applicant possesses the required minimum qualifications.
