Description

The City of Norfolk's Maritime Center, Nauticus, is currently seeking an experienced Business Manager to manage department administrative operations and activities. The Business Manager will direct and support related staff while engaging as the primary HR and IT liaison. This position will also assist with accounting and purchasing functions and performing related duties as necessary.

Nauticus is a maritime discovery center located along the waterfront in downtown, Norfolk offering a unique form of experiential learning for all ages. Through interactive exhibits and STEM to STERN programming, Nauticus uses the museum, Battleship Wisconsin, sailing center, and Schooner Virginia to tell the story of the maritime environment, industry, and the military.

Department Hiring Salary Range: $52,755 - $60,688

Essential Functions

Essential functions include but are not limited to:

  • Maintains department liaison with insurers and city risk management, city communications & technology, and outsourced financial and human resources. Finance liaison

  • Directs and supports accounting staff and receptionist.

  • Processing bi-weekly payroll, assisting supervisors with problem resolution, consulting with Human Resources regarding recruitment, the performance appraisal process, benefits and training

  • Provides technical assistance to managers on budgetary matters, policies and procedures, and regulations.

  • Performs administrative duties by conducting research, preparing reports, recommendations, and correspondence, preparing, maintaining and processing personnel records, assisting with open enrollment.

  • Inputs data into the AFMS system, monitors purchasing functions in addition to other related AFMS functions to include entering payments into the system, communicating with vendors, processing checks, preparing purchase requisitions, monitoring approvals for documents, documenting checks issued to employees, processes budget transfers received from team leaders

  • Helps create requests for proposals and other procurement activities.

  • Participates in performing statistical analyses, prepares and verifies accuracy of reports

  • Provides assistance to the Nauticus Foundation (a nonprofit 501(c)(3) affiliated organization) for financial management, as requested by the foundation, including the duties listed above.

Education/Experience

Work requires broad knowledge in a general professional or technical field. Knowledge is normally acquired through four years of college resulting in a Bachelor's degree in Business Management, Human Resources, or equivalent.

Three years experience in a supervisory position.

Additional Information & Requirements

Work Location: Nauticus Maritime Center, One Waterside Drive, Norfolk, VA 23510

Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, 8:30am-5:00pm

Signing Bonus : This position is eligible for a one-time $5,000 signing bonus. The signing bonus will be paid in two (2) increments: $2,500 upon completion of 60 days of employment, and $2,500 upon completion of your probationary period. To receive the signing bonus, you must be an active employee in good standing.

  • Regular full-time and permanent part-time employees may receive paid holidays, vacation and sick leave, employer paid pension plan, basic life insurance, voluntary participation in medical and dental, Section 457 deferred compensation, long-term disability, optional life insurance for self, spouse and children, medical and dependent care reimbursement plans, access to membership in credit union and employer provided parking.

  • Special project/grant employees are generally eligible for the same benefits of regular full-time employees; however, retirement, life insurance and participation in health plans vary depending upon funding and authorization.

  • Temporary/seasonal and part-time employees are generally only eligible for employer provided parking and access to membership in credit union.

  • Retirement

    If you are hired October 5, 2010, or after to a position with City of Norfolk Retirement System benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.

    If you are hired January 1, 2022, or after to a position with Virginia Retirement System (VRS) benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.

  • The Tuition Assistance Program is established to encourage employees toward continued self-development and education. Permanent full-time and permanent part-time classified, unclassified permanent, full-time special projects, and constitutional employees who have completed six months continuous service will be eligible to apply. The applicant’s school of enrollment must be an accredited institution.
