Supervising Manager, Transmission, Construction & Maintenance Line

Location: One of the service centers within Great River Energy MN service territory. Expected to report as needed to Elk River for required meetings.

Frequent travel for field activities. Will require occasional nights and weekends with ability to respond quickly for an emergency even in inclement weather.

Summary:

Great River Energy (GRE) is seeking a supervising manager, transmission construction & maintenance line to provide supervision and leadership to GRE line technicians, for the construction and maintenance of transmission lines, substations and associated equipment on GRE facilities. The leader will ensure that capital and maintenance, planned and unplanned, are coordinated, inspected and as-built in a cost-effective, efficient and safe manner as well as develop and administer processes and schedules to provide safe and reliable operation of the facilities.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide support and coordination with TC&M staff and other departments for effective maintenance and construction.

  • Ensure contractor compliance with GRE policies and procedures.

  • Ensure project managers and stakeholders are kept informed of progress and problems during construction so proper mitigating measures can be taken.

  • Collaborate with department supervisors to determine which projects are to be constructed by contractors during scoping or early planning.

  • Ensure pre-construction and post-construction meetings are conducted and attended when necessary.

  • Ensure that construction installations are completed correctly and returned documentation is accurate.

  • Recommend needs and priorities for replacement of existing equipment.

  • Develop and evaluate maintenance schedules to comply with GRE guidelines for system integrity and reliability.

  • Verify for accuracy and approve technician documentation that includes construction work order prints, equipment change orders, expense reporting, time reporting, and billable work for others.

  • Ensure all facilities are maintained and constructed in accordance with GRE, NESC, NERC, FERC, Federal, State and local requirements.

  • Collaborate with crews to make an advanced determination of resources and equipment needed for a project. Assure crews are efficiently addressing the project needs with resources and equipment.

  • Supervise, coach and provide work direction to the reporting staff to maximize productivity and teamwork.

  • Partner with manager to set and communicate goals for the department in support of the GRE Transmission Division strategic imperatives. Track progress.

  • Establish performance goals and provide regular feedback and evaluate performance via continuous engagement.

  • Facilitate conflict resolution between staff, GRE work groups, utilities, member cooperatives, contractors and others.

  • Recommend staffing, equipment and tool needs in support of business needs.

  • Promote and participate in providing a safe work environment and continuous improvement practices.

  • Frequent travel to service areas to keep abreast of field activities.

  • Oversite of field activities with audits and safety observations.

  • Validate that standards are met and installation practices are consistent.

  • Ensure safe practices are utilized by the field technicians.

  • Maintain positive relationships with distribution cooperatives, municipal utilities, contractors and surrounding transmission companies.

  • Stay informed of industry developments in the areas of transmission, substation, construction, maintenance, materials, and equipment.

  • Maintain open, honest communication with direct reports, department supervisors, and the manager, TC&M to ensure consistency of operations.

  • Participate in regularly scheduled staff, supervisor, safety, construction and project meetings.

  • Organize regularly scheduled staff meetings with direct reports.

  • Ensure that manager and key stakeholders are fully informed on issues affecting system integrity and the department.

    Qualifications: Knowledge typically acquired through a two-year technical degree or equivalent, supplemented with five plus years of experience in the electric utility industry, including knowledge of construction and maintenance of electrical transmission facilities, and a minimum of three years’ experience in a leadership position providing work direction.
