Rate of Pay: $52,000.00 per year

Overview: East Mississippi Correctional Facility is seeking dynamic correctional leaders to join our team as Captains. As a Captain, you will play a pivotal role in supervising the shift lieutenants, ensuring the custody and discipline of inmates, and contributing to the overall safety and effectiveness of our facility. This is a unique opportunity to climb the criminal justice career ladder while making a positive impact on the lives inside our correctional facility.

Responsibilities:

• Assist the major in planning, coordinating, and supervising administrative and programmatic activities.
• Provide staff training, evaluate performance, and recommend department and personnel changes to the chief of security.
• Participate in the preparation of the department budget; monitor and control expenditures.
• Contribute to the development and implementation of new policies, procedures, and programs affecting security.
• Supervise correctional officers and inmates, including scheduling, training, counseling, and evaluation of assigned personnel.
• Direct searches for contraband and ensure security measures are in place.
• Respond to facility emergencies and implement appropriate protocols.
• Read, review, and apply information from inmate records related to health, safety, and facility security.
• Supervise the preparation and maintenance of records, forms, and reports.
• Promote positive social skills through modeling appropriate behaviors and intervening when necessary.
• Maintain accountability of staff, inmates, and property while adhering to safety practices.
• Perform other duties as assigned within capabilities as determined by management.

Education and Experience Requirements:

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Three (3) years of corrections or related experience, with at least one (1) year in a supervisory capacity.
• Valid driver's license in the state of Mississippi with an acceptable driving record.

Post-Hire Requirements:

• Successfully complete 120 hours of pre-service training, including firearms and unarmed self-defense courses.
• Ongoing training and development, including annual re-qualification in the use of firearms and successful completion of unarmed self-defense training.
