General Summary of the Position:

Responsible for running the day to day dirt operations on a construction site. Directs a crew as a working foreman and performs skilled work in the grading, leveling and preparation of dirt sites and related work as required. May operate a variety of heavy construction equipment.

Essential Functions:

  • Tracking and recording daily production of the crews and reporting back to the superintendent.

  • Inputting daily log books, time sheets and other job related paperwork.

  • Attend and facilitate coordination, production and safety meetings.

  • Communicate with onsite subcontractors, general contractors and/or owners.

  • Ensure job equipment and tools are maintained in good working order and are safe for use.

  • Participate in training and other forms of development to strengthen technical, safety and other skills.

  • Order and schedule equipment and material(s) deliveries as required.

  • Manage, supervise and coordinate onsite work crews.

  • Supervise installation and completion of work on time and budget.

  • Maintain a clean job site: ensure all tools and equipment are picked up and secure job site each day in order to eliminate potential hazards.

  • Operate construction equipment as required.

  • Ensure that proper safety and incident reporting procedures are followed. Bring problems to the attention of the Superintendent, Safety Director or HR Director as appropriate.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Have knowledge of and experience reading, understanding, and implementing drawings.

  • Good mathematical skills are required.

  • Must be competent with the use of a laser and transit.

  • Must have strong interpersonal communication skills to work with a variety of people at different levels.

  • Thorough knowledge of proper use of equipment, materials and supplies used in heavy construction work.

  • Must be adaptable and able to work in a variety of conditions.

  • Thorough knowledge of applicable safety precautions.

  • Excellent management skills are required to manage, lead and motivate employees.

  • Ability to work independently and direct daily activities of crew according to work schedule.

  • Ability to meet attendance schedule with dependability and consistency.

Required Education, Training and Experience:

  • Must have at least 2+ years of experience as a dirt or underground utility foreman.

  • High school diploma or equivalent (GED) required; some college preferred.

  • Valid Class A or B CDL required.

  • OSHA certifications are a plus (30hr training, trench shoring, confined space and first aid)

  • Any combination of education and experience that demonstrates the knowledge and ability to perform the work.

Work Environment:

  • Regularly works near moving mechanical parts and in outside conditions that include inclement weather, heat and humidity, and exposure to dust and asphalt.

  • Must be able to lift, push, pull or carry objects, use abdominal and lower back muscles to provide support over time without fatigue and to effectively jump, sprint or throw an object.

  • Requires good manual dexterity (hand, hand with arm, two hands) and multi-limb coordination.

  • Noise level is generally loud.

  • Must be able to quickly move arms and legs.

  • Excellent stamina is required.

Experience Levels:

  • Level C – Entry level foreman with 5-6 years’ equipment operation experience; should have some prior supervisory or management experience.

  • Level B – Mid level foreman with 7-10 years’ operator experience & 2-5 years’ foreman or leadman experience.

  • Level A – Senior level foreman with 11+ year’s operator experience and 6+ years’ foreman or leadman experience.
