Job ID 12427 Location Case Main Campus Full/Part Time Full-Time Regular/Temporary Regular Job Description POSITION OBJECTIVE Working with a high degree of independence and under general direction, the Research Assistant 4 will coordinate major activities in medical and related technical areas, and oversee the use of experimental methodology to measure and test the effects of S-nitrosylation on biochemical, cellular and physiological functions in the Dr. Jonathan Stamler Lab. This position is responsible for assisting students, staff, and collaborators, including coordination of ongoing research at other collaborating laboratories, and for maintaining appropriate records of the research work done by all staff and by outside collaborators. The research assistant will coordinate with outside vendors to ensure that research supplies are always available as needed and that research equipment is maintained in an operational state. This position will coordinate with university safety and compliance staff to ensure that the laboratory is kept free of hazards and remains in compliance with all safety regulations. This position will work with animals. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Provide input and recommendations to principal investigator regarding significant developments in research projects, including data collection and maintenance. Establish goals and objectives for the efficient and timely completion of projects, in collaboration with the principal investigator. Meet with the principal investigator on a regular basis to review and set priorities, staff/student-related issues, and future research and staff planning. Assist with IACUC and IBC protocol creation, submission, renewals, and ensure that all guidelines are met. (10%) Coordinate major activities of laboratory/ research. Develop standards for operating procedures for the laboratory and maintain required safety files/binders and documentation. Provide infrastructure for all aspects of lab operation, including data archiving; supply ordering, receiving and inventory control; sample storage and documentation; unique reagent (plasmids, antisera, etc.) storage, documentation and shipment to collaborators; equipment usage and maintenance; chemical, biohazard and radioactivity storage and disposal. Act as liaison with the Technology Transfer office to obtain restricted materials, to send out restricted materials to other labs, and to deposit materials to commercial venues (such as Addgene). Work with vendors to negotiate prices on all major equipment purchases and provide quotes to the department finance manager. Ensure all major equipment is bar-coded for equipment inventory reports. Coordinate and negotiate service contracts for select equipment in the laboratory and maintain files/binders and documentation. Manage periodic equipment maintenance and repair services. Ensure that laboratory is maintained in a clean and safe state and that all animal and biosafety approvals are secured and observed. Perform safety checks, including maintaining chemical inventory and radiation safety wipe-tests. (10%) May supervise research assistants and technicians. Interview, hire, orient and supervise research staff, initiating all necessary paperwork, and addressing employee issues and concerns. Maintain regular contact with all research staff to assist them in carrying out their job responsibilities. Provide and oversee training of all research staff. Teach or instruct others in research techniques. Train new lab members in commonly used and lab-specific techniques. Support optimization and standardization of any new techniques brought into the lab.
