New York University Post Doctoral Associate in Brooklyn, New York

NYU Tandon School of Engineering

Department of Civil and Urban Engineering and C2SMART Center

Post Doctoral Associate

The Department of Civil and Urban Engineering and C2SMART Center is seeking a postdoctoral associate to work on faculty-led research. The candidate will work under the supervision of Dr. Omar Wani. This research position will primarily conduct research on projects related to assessing the resilience of distributed stormwater infrastructure using remotely sensed big data as predictive features. Under faculty supervision, the candidate will lead the investigation of resilience of distributed stormwater infrastructure, like culverts on road networks, by employing a combination of probabilistic, data-driven, and physics-based approaches on a C2SMART-funded research project. The candidate will develop techniques to reliably explore compound, interconnected, and cascading risks. The final goal is to generate generalizable insights on the adequacy of such global stormwater infrastructure under climate change.

Apart from conducting state-of-the-art scientific research and publishing the findings in high-impact journals, the candidate will also be expected to work together, coordinate and communicate with collaborators (including partners and agency sponsors), participate in weekly meetings, mentor students, help with preparing teaching material (one course per semester), contribute to writing research proposals, and complete project tasks by assigned deadlines.

In compliance with NYC’s Pay Transparency Act, the annual base salary range for this position is $62,500 to $70,000. New York University considers factors such as (but not limited to) the specific grant funding and the terms of the research grant when extending an offer.

The ideal candidate(s) will possess a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering (or equivalent related field) with a background preferably in large-sample hydrologic modeling, geospatial data analytics, and advanced statistics. Experience in deploying machine-learning methods in conjunction with large, remotely-sensed datasets using High Performance Computing is an advantage.

The preferred candidate will possess one or all of:

  • Strong computational and statistical skills.

  • Excellent publication record.

  • Ability to work collaboratively in teams.
