Microsoft Corporation Principal Researcher – Systems & AI in Bangalore, India

We closely collaborate with multiple research teams and product groups across the globe who bring a multitude of technical expertise in cloud systems, machine learning, privacy and software engineering. We communicate our research both internally and externally through academic publications, open-source releases, blog posts, patents, and industry conferences. Further, we also collaborate with academic and industry partners to advance the state of the art and aim for material product impact that will affect 100s of millions of customers.

Within our Microsoft wide Systems Innovation (https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/research/group/systems-innovation/) initiative, we are leveraging our deep workload understanding and combining algorithmic research with AI/ML techniques and hardware innovation to provide a step function improvement in operational efficiency and reliability enabling us to deliver best in class productivity experiences while meeting our sustainability goals.

We are looking for a Principal Researcher with an innovative mindset to design and develop novel machine learning and algorithmic solutions for our cloud infrastructure with a singular purpose of making them scalable, fast, reliable, and efficient.

The ideal candidate will have a strong background in machine learning or systems research and the ambition to apply them to large scale production systems. Some of the challenges include optimizing placement and scheduling of dynamic workloads on distributed cloud infrastructure to improve resource utilization across compute, memory, storage, networking as well as AI hardware accelerators. The algorithms we develop must capture the complex behaviour of the workloads, dynamically adapt to changing conditions, and need to be tested/implemented on production systems without compromising user experience.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct state of the artresearch atthe intersection of AI and Systems domains to improve Cloud efficiency and reliability.

  • Driving the end-to-end research agenda from establishing the problem definition to designing algorithms, tools, and models.

  • Publish and contribute to top scientific conferences and journals.

  • Cross-Organization Leadership: Effective collaborate across research and engineeringteams.

  • Work with a small group of fellow researchers and product engineering teams to design and execute practical solutions for step-function real-world impact.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Doctorate in relevant field AND 3+ years related-research experience

  • OR equivalent experience.

  • 3+ years leadership experience (e.g., leading research projects, leading program committees, mentoring interns/post-docs).

  • Research experience and at least five publications in top conferences/journals in one of the following areas: machine learning, systems, privacy, software engineering, statistics, optimization.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Doctorate in relevant field AND 5+ years related-research experience

  • OR equivalent experience.

  • 5+ years experience in translating scientific research to engineering or product impact.
