Amazon Manager, Data Engineering, OTS-DataTech in Austin, Texas

Description

Operations Technology Solutions, DataTech (DT) team is looking for an technically astute Data Engineering manager who thrives delivering cutting edge infrastructure supporting NextGen analytics and Data as a Product methodology. This position will be responsible over a team of Data Engineers partnering with Data Science, BI Engineering and Product managers to deliver a world class scalable system supporting Data as a Product.

Our ideal candidate will have analytic skills to dive into our controls and develop insights, vision and creativity to find innovative ways to act on these insights, the technical chops to translate those ideas into innovative design, and strong engineering skills to harness the passion and energy of teams across the company to drive the vision and execution of our products and services.

Key job responsibilities

You will:

• Own the problem space: Working backwards from the customer experience and through deep data analysis, you will identify short- and long-term opportunities for improving data quality and design data solutions around it. The team hopes to build a system that has ability to provide business insights at millions of intersections of data to identify new opportunities to save cost or improve margins.

• Design a system that can handle data at massive scale: You will build simple solutions that scale for billions of records with strict demands of availability, latency and maintainability.

• Apply Machine Learning: We rely on historical financials as basis for future forecasting. You will partner across the org with AI/ML professional in identifying opportunities to apply ML-based solution to identify patterns and improve our forecasting process.

• Be the driver of new technology and Ideas: Our solutions are built on AWS technologies such as EMR, Glue, SageMaker, Cloudsearch, RedShift, DynamoDB, LakeFormation, etc. and open-source technical stack like Spark, Hudi, etc. to build for large scale. In addition to leveraging these fully, you will look for new technologies and continually push the team towards novel and simpler ways to build solutions.

• Be the ultimate problem solver: You will take the most vexing problems head on and stretch the boundaries of what is doable. Serve as a technical lead on our most demanding, cross-functional projects– particularly important is how this idea engages across multiple platforms

Additionally, as a technical manager in the team you will:

• Mentor and Develop Talent: Assist in the career development of others, mentoring employees and teams on advanced technical issues and career growth. This team is globally distributed and there is a chance to be a part of the build out of the group.

• Raise the Quality Bar: Provide guidance and mentoring to ensure that right technology choices are being made. Exert technical influence over multiple teams, increasing their productivity and effectiveness by sharing your deep knowledge and experience.

• Define the long-term strategy: Be part of the management team that develops strategic plans and ensures tactical execution of these plans.

About the team

The team is a global team located mainly in Austin Texas, Nashville Tennessee and a in Bangalore India.

Made up of Data Engineers, BI Engineers and Data Scientists.

We are open to hiring candidates to work out of one of the following locations:

Austin, TX, USA

Basic Qualifications

  • 5+ years of processing data with a massively parallel technology (such as Redshift, Teradata, Netezza, Spark or Hadoop based big data solution) experience

  • 8+ years of data engineering experience

  • Experience managing a data or BI team

  • 5+ years of relational database technology (such as Redshift, Oracle, MySQL or MS SQL) experience

  • Experience communicating to senior management and customers verbally and in writing

  • Experience leading and influencing the data or BI strategy of your team or organization

  • Experience in at least one modern scripting or programming language, such as Python, Java, Scala, or NodeJS

  • Knowledge of software development life cycle or agile development environment with emphasis on BI practices

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with big data technologies such as: Hadoop, Hive, Spark, EMR

  • Experience with AWS Tools and Technologies (Redshift, S3, EC2)

  • Master's degree in computer science, engineering, analytics, mathematics, statistics, IT or equivalent

  • Experience in developing and operating large-scale data structures for business intelligence analytics (using ETL/ELT processes)
