Administer a complex research organization, develop and sustain research programs across the spectrum of energy, natural resources, environmental, and economic sciences to meet the needs of the state, the global community, and the geoscience profession. Integrate fundamental and applied research emphasizing large federally-funded projects, dynamic industry consortia, and objective energy and resource science to deliver high-impact outcomes for public and private research sponsors. Manage internal resources to develop and promote the Bureaus research strengths and broader research portfolio, embracing and expanding the range of subject disciplines represented in the Bureau. Coordinate with Bureau Associate Directors and the JSG Associate Dean for Research to identify research targets of opportunity and areas of potential synergy, to ensure that necessary collaboration occurs, and to plan for appropriate staffing by internal transfer, recruiting and hiring.Develop in-depth contacts in industry, federal and state governments, and selected foundations and ensure that new program opportunities are understood by Bureau staff and opportunities are strategically developed. Foster collaborations and positive working relationships with other units in JSG and across UT to fully leverage the deep intellectual resources of a top research university that is extensively vested in energy/environmental research. Develop strategic collaborative efforts with other universities, national laboratories, and state and federal agencies.Provide outstanding operational and fiscal management to guide the Bureau to the next level of accomplishment and impact. Demonstrate excellence in the recruitment and management of top scientific talent and manage people and resources strategically, transparently and with integrity in the best interests of the Bureau. Have a collegial management and leadership style that communicates well with colleagues at all levels and engages others to the greater purpose of the Bureau and JSG. Communicate regularly about budgetary, scientific, and professional issues with the scientific leadership of the Bureau and the JSG.Strengthen the culture of excellence, collaboration and innovation within the Bureau and JSG. Promote a respectful workplace that values all employees, offers long-term career development opportunities, and demonstrates commitment to all employees. Create cohesive leadership through effective delegation of responsibility and authority, and thoughtful performance goal setting and evaluation of the Bureaus senior leadership team. Create a sense of purpose/meaning for the Bureau that engages others to the greater purpose for the organization as a whole.Demonstrate professional leadership and visibility at the state, national and international levels through presentations to external audiences, interactions with the media, hosting industry and governmental guests and professional events, and attendance at professional meetings. Be publicly visible in Texas and national energy and natural resource discussions. Provide leadership and counsel to the Legislature, local government, State and Federal agencies, the private sector, and the public regarding resource and environmental issues, economic development and management of natural resources, and ensure that relevant research results are effectively and efficiently communicated to users.
